The Grove Arcade: Asheville’s Iconic Shopping & Dining Destination

The Grove Arcade is one of the most vibrant and historically rich shopping destinations in downtown Asheville, NC. Lined with boutique shops, artisan galleries, and local eateries, it serves as a central hub for Western North Carolina’s famous foodie and arts scene. Beyond its bustling present, the building holds a fascinating history as an architectural marvel designed to enliven Asheville’s skyline.

🏛️ A Rich History & Architecture

Grand Vision & Architecture

E.W. Grove arrived in Asheville in 1910 and envisioned a grand five-story building crowned by a 14-story tower to turn downtown into a thriving cultural hub. Though Grove passed away in 1927 before full realization, the completed 260,000-square-foot base quickly became a regional commercial center.

Wartime & Government Service

During World War II, the federal government took over the Grove Arcade to support the war effort. It remained in government service through the 1980s until local citizens spearheaded efforts to restore the landmark to its original public purpose.

Modern Revitalization

After joining the National Register of Historic Places and undergoing extensive restoration, the building reopened in 2002. Today, it features an indoor marketplace, fine dining, specialty retail, and 42 upper-floor luxury apartments.
