Known as the "King of Waterfalls" in the Blue Ridge Escarpment, Upper Whitewater Falls plunges a dramatic 411 feet through the Nantahala National Forest, holding the title of the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Just across the South Carolina border, the river continues dropping another 400 feet at Lower Whitewater Falls, creating an extraordinary 800+ foot descent along the rugged Whitewater River gorge.

A smooth, paved 1/4-mile walkway leads from the parking area to an expansive upper observation deck. Offers sweeping vistas of the waterfall and is accessible to visitors of all mobility levels.
Descend a 154-step wooden staircase down to a lower wooden viewing platform for a dramatic, up-close perspective of the water crashing down the gorge walls.
For avid long-distance hikers, a half-mile connector path drops down from the observation deck to the river below, joining the 85-mile Foothills Trail system.
⚠️ Important Safety Note: Whitewater Falls features sheer, slippery rock faces. Venturing off marked boardwalks or climbing near the top or base of the falls is extremely hazardous and strictly prohibited. The best and safest views are directly from the official viewing platforms.
