Whiteside Mountain
Standing dramatically along the Eastern Continental Divide between Cashiers and Highlands, Whiteside Mountain is considered the crown jewel of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Geologists estimate this massive granite formation is among the oldest mountains in the world—between 390 and 460 million years old. Famous for its sheer 750-foot granite cliffs that resemble frozen sheets of ice, Whiteside offers some of the most spectacular, high-elevation vistas in Eastern North America.

Reintroduced in 1985, endangered American peregrine falcons nest annually along the cliff ledges. (Cliff access is seasonally restricted in spring/summer to protect nesting birds).
🌲 The Loop Hike
Beginning on an old forested logging road, the trail climbs steadily to the exposed granite ridgeline amidst native Appalachian flora, mountain laurel, and rhododendrons.
🪨 Geologic Heritage
Distinct white streaks across the south-facing cliffs consist of exposed quartz and feldspar, formed through millions of years of heat, pressure, and natural erosion.
