Perched high above Highlands, North Carolina, Sunset Rock & Ravenel Park offers one of the most accessible and rewarding natural viewpoints in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains. Maintained by the Highlands Cashiers Land Trust, this historic 10-acre nature reserve features a short, family-friendly trail leading to a massive, flat granite slab that overlooks the town of Highlands and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Trailhead off Horse Cove Road, Highlands, NC 28741 (just 0.7 miles east of downtown Highlands, past the Nature Center)
1.2 miles round trip; easy-to-moderate walk along a gravel forest road.
Free to visit; small gravel parking area available at the trailhead.
Parking at the trailhead is limited to a few spots. Flashlights or headlamps are highly recommended if you plan to stay past dusk to watch the sunset!
As the name suggests, Sunset Rock is widely considered the premier location in Highlands to watch the sun dip behind the western mountain peaks, casting golden and crimson light across the valley.
A short path across the granite outcrop leads to Sunrise Rock, offering early-morning visitors sweeping views facing east over Horse Cove and the Blue Ridge Escarpment.
The trail follows a gentle, gravel road through a shaded forest canopy of mountain laurel, native hardwoods, and rhododendron. At just 1.2 miles round-trip with a slight elevation gain, it's suitable for hikers of all ages, children, and dogs on leashes.
Donated in 1914 by the Ravenel family, this preserve is one of the oldest protected conservation areas in North Carolina.
