One of North Carolina’s oldest professional theater companies, Mountain Theatre Company has been bringing live theatrical entertainment to Highlands, North Carolina, since the 1930s. Founded during the Great Depression as a local summer troupe, the organization has evolved into Western North Carolina’s premier professional regional theater, producing Broadway-caliber musicals, revues, and holiday performances.
Originally formed in 1938 as the Highlands Little Theatre (and later known for decades as The Highlands Playhouse), the company rebranded in 2022 to reflect its growth as a professional regional theater attracting talent from across the nation.
In 2023, Mountain Theatre Company became the resident professional theater company at the state-of-the-art Highlands Performing Arts Center, offering elevated staging, acoustics, and guest comfort.
Presents a robust MainStage season from summer through December featuring high-energy musicals, song-and-dance revues, benefit concerts, and festive holiday specials.
