Located in the Nantahala National Forest just minutes from downtown Highlands, North Carolina, Glen Falls is a spectacular multi-tiered waterfall set along the East Fork of Overflow Creek. Dropping approximately 600 feet across a series of dramatic cascades in the Blue Valley, this scenic trail offers hikers four distinct viewing stops, sweeping mountain vistas, and immersive forest scenery.
Drops about 70 feet over a high rock ledge. A side path leads to an upper observation deck offering a unique bird's-eye view looking right over the crest of the waterfall toward the Blue Valley.
Cascades 60 feet down a wide, stair-stepping rock face—widely considered the most beautiful and picturesque section of the trail.
A smaller, quieter 15-foot cascade ending in a shallow pool at the bottom of the main trail section.
In addition to the waterfalls, clearing platforms along the upper trail offer views out across the Nantahala National Forest toward Rabun Bald in Georgia.
The trail winds through dense groves of mountain laurel, rhododendrons, and hardwood forest, making it especially stunning during spring blooms and peak autumn foliage.
Glen Falls Road (SR 1618, off NC Highway 106), Highlands, NC 28741 (approx. 3 miles southwest of downtown Highlands)
~1.7 to 2 miles round trip; moderately challenging. Descends continuously on the way out and ascends roughly 400 feet back up to the parking lot via switchbacks.
Free to enter with a small gravel parking area at the trailhead.
Observation decks are provided for safe viewing. Always stay on designated trails and dry rocks, as wet stones near the water's edge are extremely slippery.
